Summary
BLACK DRAGON is the sequel to the novels QUESTER and THE MUD FOX. It continues the adventures of Harry Quester, U.S. Navy and Allman Buddinger, The Mud Fox. In BLACK DRAGON, Harry leaves Vietnam and tries to "cross the River Styx" to find life without death and fear, but events keep dragging him back.
Lieutenant Commander Harry Quester completes his tour in Viet Nam, turning over his command at SEA FLOAT to his Vietnamese counterpart Tran Van Loi. Loi promises Harry that he will locate Harry's missing Vietnamese daughter, Mai. Mai is the daughter of Lai, who betrayed Harry. Harry doesn't know where Lai secreted away their daughter, and worries that Mai may be with the Viet Cong or in North Viet Nam. Harry meets his girl, Catty Cattaglini and they fly to Singapore to enjoy being together, free of the burdens of the war. They talk about finding Mai, getting married and "returning to the world".
Harry and Catty have a chance encounter with Allman Buddinger, the Mud Fox and his girl Brenda McAllister. Harry hasn't seen his buddy Allman since Allman went to "face off" with the CIA agent, the Vulture, in the Nam Cam Forest (in THE MUD FOX). They find out that Allman has been in a federal prison and has escaped. Harry tries to see Allman, but Allman tries to elude them. Harry and Catty follow Allman and Brenda into a forested part of Singapore. They lose Allman and are attacked by Huk Long (Black Dragon) Pirates. Harry is seriously wounded. Allman and Brenda show up and save Harry and Catty from the Pirates. They take them out of the forest to a Golf Club House on the outskirts of Singapore. Then they quickly disappear, warning Harry to stay away from them.
Catty and Harry encounter Alvin Hopewell, the Vulture, at the Golf Club House. The Vulture questions them about The Mud Fox. The Vulture takes Harry to a hospital. Catty finds herself sedated and on a plane back to Washington. Harry is taken to the Bethesda Naval Hospital where he recovers slowly. He is kidnapped from the hospital by Big Chong, a giant Chinaman, but manages to escape. He begins to understand that this thing called the Huk Long is after him, but he doesn't know why.
Harry recovers. He runs into his old flame, Beth Morningstar, who shows him a baby boy that Harry knows is his. Beth says she is going to marry Peter Thorne, Harry's old newspaperman nemesis. Harry has a brief affair with Beth. Catty catches them together and leaves Harry. Catty disappears and Harry receives a note to come to Hong Kong to get her back. He goes and is again captured by the Huk Long He finds that his once good buddy the Mud Fox is now working for the Huk Long.
The horribly disfigured Huk Long leader, Mr. Ha Ha, seeks revenge against Harry. Harry does not know why. He must fight the Mud Fox to escape the Huk Long. Harry's quest to find Mai leads him to meet Tahara, a beautiful and mysterious girl from Tahiti. His quest takes him back into the war in North Viet Nam where he must fight his way south to find Loi at Hue City. Harry finds that the North Vietnamese are secretly planning "The Easter Offensive" against South Viet Nam. They are receiving and storing STYX anti-ship missals to destroy the U.S. Seventh Fleet that supports the South Vietnamese Army. Harry returns to his first love in the Navy, a destroyer. There is intense action at sea as Harry tries to defeat the STYX missiles.
Harry continues to seek Mai and finds that he must kill Mr. Ha Ha to have her released. Black Dragon takes you through fast paced high adventure and intense romance from Saigon to Washington, from Singapore to Hong Kong. In the surprise ending, you'll find out if Harry succeeds in "crossing the river of death" away from the war and back to "the world"
